This project, completed in February 2023, was conceived and setup by Chemistry faculty member Christian Brückner who had collected samples for decades while dreaming of a way to display them Marcos Palomo from 118Display provided the physical display case, all software support, and complemented the collection in a major way. The other display provides a close-up image of each item displayed, complete with a brief description.įor further information, see UConn Today and UConn Magazine Two interactive touch displays deliver information: One provides general information about the elements and allows one to call up visually appealing chemical reactions of the element selected. ![]() Medicine, engineering, the arts, chemistry, biology and aspects of history, geography, are represented. Items of vanity and luxury are next to items essential to life and tools. Select items are genuine antiques, others are very precious, but plenty are neither – but all items were chosen to delight and educate. Some samples hail from space, were gathered at the bottom of the ocean or pulled from the earth. Of the ~1400 samples included, some are quite unique, while many others are found in every household. The display was designed to weave a dense fabric of chemistry and its long-standing and comprehensive influence on every aspect of life its density invites discovery and re-visits. This is how the Clear & Simple Reference Tables Guides were born.The publicly accessible Periodic Table Display exhibits samples of the elements (where feasible) and related items of daily life, corresponding minerals, and key compounds, including samples from past and current teaching and research activities of the faculty of the Department of Chemistry. In addition, the Merck Index includes a reference of over 500 named organic reactions and reference tables that include common abbreviations, chemical structures, constants, and conversions. I called it Bonding with the Reference Tables. The Merck Index is a fully-searchable database with over 11,500 monographs on chemicals, drugs, and biologicals. I sold thousands of copies across New York State over a short period of time! The terrific feedback from teachers and their requests of "the same for Chemistry!" encouraged me to create the Chemistry reference tables guide. It is very resourceful when in need of calculating densities and more chemistry. I named it Unearthing the Reference Tables. This shows formulas and vocabulary regarding the aspect of chemistry. When I arrived back home, I finished the task I had begun. Three hours and 4 tables later, my laptop died. But I did not realize just how much there was to explain on each table until I got down to it. I had originally intended to make a brief, 4-5 page booklet. So, I took out my laptop and my Earth Science reference tables and began to work on a reference tables guide. It seemed such a pity - the answers were right there in front of them during the test! I had noticed on tests that, for some reason, many of my students tended to get reference tables-based questions wrong. Reference entries in A Dictionary of Physics (6) Length: 290 words in A Dictionary of Chemistry (6) Length: 473 words in World Encyclopedia Length: 115 words. ![]() It was almost June, so I decided to start putting together a review booklet for my students. Several years ago, a month before the regents, I was stuck in a car for the nine hour drive between New York and Toronto. ![]()
